 How Couples Counseling Works

The first step is to schedule a free consultation where we can determine if we’re a good fit. We’ll talk about what prompted you (and your partner(s)) to seek therapy and about what you hope to achieve.

During our first session, we’ll explore in more detail your journey to counseling. I will do a lot of listening to give you space to share your story. The first session is generally for information gathering, so the I can learn about what brought you to counseling, get the thoughts of everyone involved, and observe partner dynamics.

In our second session, together we’ll create a plan of what we want to achieve during our time together.

Couples counseling is typically a short-term solution focused therapy consisting of an average of 12 sessions. At times more sessions may be required to meet the goals we’ve established.

In our subsequent sessions, we will continue to work on the goals we’ve created at the beginning of counseling. If new problems arise, we will hold space for those problems, too. We will check in on your goals and make adjustments as necessary.
